We’re So Awkward in Front of the Camera…”

Why, Those Are My Favourite Couples to Photograph

If you’ve ever looked at engagement photos and thought:

“Yeah… but that could never be us,”

I promise you are not alone.

In fact, one of the most common things couples say to me when they enquire is:

“We’re awkward.”

“We hate having our photo taken.”

“We never know what to do with our hands.”

“One of us really doesn’t like being in front of the camera.”

And honestly? That’s absolutely fine.

Because the truth is — most people are not professional models. Most couples haven’t spent years practising poses in front of a mirror. Most people feel uncomfortable when a camera suddenly appears in their face.

That’s exactly why I photograph weddings the way I do.

As the face behind Tudor Rose Photography, my approach has always been centred around helping real people feel relaxed, comfortable, and genuinely themselves.

You Don’t Need to “Know How to Pose”

One of the biggest misconceptions about wedding photography is that you need to know what you’re doing in front of the camera.

You don’t.

My job is not to turn you into models. My job is to help you feel safe enough to just be yourselves.

That means:

no hours of stiff posing

no forced fake smiles

no making you stand awkwardly while everyone watches

no pressure to perform

Instead, I gently guide you into natural moments together.

Sometimes I’ll get you walking.

Sometimes I’ll make you laugh.

Sometimes I’ll simply step back and let you have a quiet moment together while I capture it naturally.

The magic happens when you stop focusing on the camera and start focusing on each other.

The Best Photos Happen When You Relax

The couples who tell me they’re “awkward” are often the couples who end up with the most emotional, joyful, natural galleries.

Why?

Because they’re not trying to look perfect.

They’re just being real.

One of my lovely couples said:

“We wanted relaxed photos but that still looked amazing and this was achieved perfectly! Especially for my partner who hates having her photo taken — she was so relaxed and so happy with the outcome.”

Another couple shared:

“Amanda made us feel so relaxed, and as if we had known her forever.”

And honestly, that means more to me than anything else.

Because beautiful photos are important — of course they are — but how you feel during the experience matters just as much.

I Blend Into Your Day — Not Take It Over

A huge part of helping camera-shy couples feel comfortable is the way I work throughout the wedding day.

I’m not there barking orders or making your wedding feel like a photoshoot.

I photograph your day as it naturally unfolds:

the nervous excitement in the morning

your nan crying during the ceremony

the uncontrollable laughter during speeches

your friends absolutely losing their minds on the dance floor

those tiny little in-between moments you didn’t even realise happened

Many couples tell me afterwards they barely noticed I was there half the time — which is honestly the biggest compliment.

One couple described me as:

“Like family… blending and moving around the day capturing moments no one else saw.”

That documentary, candid approach is often what helps nervous couples relax so much. You’re not constantly being “put on display.” You get to actually enjoy your wedding.

You Don’t Have to Be Confident to Have Beautiful Photos

This one is important.

You do not need to:

lose weight

practise posing

become more photogenic

be extroverted

love attention

You just need to show up as yourselves.

Real connection photographs beautifully.

The way you squeeze each other’s hand.

The way you laugh together.

The way you look at each other when nobody else notices.

That’s the stuff that matters.

And as someone who naturally gravitates toward people who feel nervous or uncomfortable in front of the camera, I genuinely love helping couples realise:

“Oh… this actually isn’t scary at all.”

More Than Just a Photographer

One thing that comes up in my testimonials time and time again is that couples felt supported beyond just the photos.

Whether it’s fixing buttonholes, calming nerves, helping organise people, or simply being a reassuring presence, I know weddings can feel overwhelming sometimes.

My background in nursing taught me how to stay calm under pressure and how to put people at ease — and that naturally flows into the way I work on wedding days.

You’re never expected to “perform” around me.

To The Couples Reading This Thinking “That’s Us…”

If you feel awkward in front of the camera, I want you to know something:

You are exactly the kind of couple I love photographing.

Not despite the nerves.

Not despite the awkwardness.

Because of it.

Because once you relax, stop overthinking, and just enjoy your day together — that’s when the real moments happen.

And those are always the photographs that matter most years later.
